BACKUPS

One of the most important things any organisation or business can do is to ensure there is an adaquate and tested backup solution in place. There are generally three classes of backup which are workgroup, departmental and enterprise. The workgroup backup can be as small as a single desktop PC, or it may have several PC's. In the case of a single PC you can use system backup tools to write your important files to either CD, DVD, or tape backup. In case there are several PC's the backup media requirements changes to either tape or disk., our preference is disk because of price and reliability. In departmental backup strategies with multiple machines and sites it becomes necessary to have a specialised backup program such as EMC Networker or Veritas / Symantec Net Backup. These program work by placing client agents on each of the PC's or work stations to be backed up in order to communicate with a central server which has a tape library attached. Restores can be managed either from the client or the server so administration becomes simpler.
