One Rack Unit is about 1 3/4" or 44.45mm. The smaller form factors facilitate placing more units within one 19"rack with advances in cooling and CPU performance it is now possible to have a very dense compute farm in a single rack. Where Rack Mount is not required. The humble Desktop PC can be given a little more disk and memory to provide limited services to a small work group. Don't let the size of the case fool you however inside you will find hardware raid SCSI as opposed to SATA disks and solid performing processors.
STORAGE
Disk Arrays can very greatly from 2RU to 4RU and some even larger. The 2RU storage array has become one of the more modular building blocks of disk storage as it offers a good price performance ratio
